Speaking of California poppies…
In my recent post about Mission Santa Barbara I included a photo of California poppies (Eschscholzia californica). Ever since then poppies have been on my mind. Yesterday afternoon I visited a friend, and near her house I came across the densest mass of poppies I’ve seen all year. The intense orange from thousands of flowers causes people to stop dead in their tracks. I’m surprised there hasn’t been an accident yet as drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians alike are distracted by the spectacle in front of them!
Gorgeous! There's nothing quite so cheerful and bright as California Poppies in bloom!
ReplyDeleteI agree! California poppies are so common that some people don't pay much attention to them, but they are hard to beat for spring color. No other flower is quite that orange!
DeleteLovely! We like them a lot and try to grow them from seed every year
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that California poppies have become popular in Europe. What a wonderful piece of our botanical legacy to share with the world!
DeleteThis is fabulous. I would go out of my way to see this every day. I want this in my garden, but the best I've ever done is have 2 plants survive to bloom. I think I'll try harder this year.
ReplyDeleteCalifornia poppies are definitely in their prime around town. Unfortunately, in my garden the few poppies that did come up from the 500+ seeds I sowed last fall are far from blooming.
DeleteI love poppies!! When I was in the UK, I found out about Welsh poppies (Meconopsis cambrica) and also some absolutely huge poppies they had over there and I decided I must have some in my garden! And when in larger amounts, these flowers are simply amazing!!
